Scarlett Estevez Gets Into The Holiday Spirit In Disney Channel’s Christmas Again
What if you got to live Christmas over and over again? Scarlett Estevez finds out in her brand new Disney Channel Original Movie Christmas Again centered around a family of divorce coming together for the holiday season. I spoke with Estevez about the film, her upcoming show Ultra Violet and Black Scorpion, and the end of Lucifer.
In Christmas Again, Estevez plays Rowena, a teen who is struggling with changes to her holiday traditions and finds herself in a time loop. The film is set around a Latino family, which was really important to Estevez, who is Mexican. “My culture is such a special thing,” Estevez told me, reminiscing on her own Christmas traditions. “The food that we have in this movie and the songs that we sing and the dancing and the energy… it's something that I really feel like I can relate to. It's so real and it's coming from a place that we can all relate to. This movie was just super special because of that […] and now people are going to be able to see that we do that and feel us.”
Estevez shared her favorite filming moment: ”One of my favorites was definitely the hockey rink. That was such a fun scene to film and it was crazy behind-the-scenes. I couldn't really ice skate so they had me on this little platform thingy and they were dragging me across the ice. That was super cool and super fun.
Despite the big changes her character deals with, she hopes viewers take away the important message of family. “Something I really want people to be able to take away from this movie is the message that even though this family is changing and that there are new people coming into her life, like Louie and the new mom,” said Estevez, “her family is always going to be there.”
Next up, Estevez will be starring in a new Disney Channel show called Ultra Violet and Black Scorpion, which is about a young girl who becomes a luchador-style superhero. “It's such a cool TV show to be a part of because […] I've always wanted to see a superhero that looks like me,” she said.
Of course, we had to talk about Lucifer, as Trixie Espinosa was one of the first roles that put her on the map. The show ended this past September after six seasons. “[It was] sad to be letting go of. It was such a special project because of it being one of the first things that I was a part of,” she said. “Being able to show people who I am in those first stages [was] super cool.”
Christmas Again is currently streaming on Disney+.
