A Guide To The Netflix Holiday Cinematic Universe

Time travel, royal romances, doppelgängers, and massive amounts of hot cocoa? It sounds like a Netflix Christmas! With 10 films and counting in the Netflix Holiday Movie Universe… this interconnected world just keeps getting bigger and more festive.

It all started when producers needed to pick a movie to show on the TV screen in 2018’s The Holiday Calendar. “It felt like a natural fit to show one of our other films available on Netflix,” said Amanda Phillips Atkins, EVP at MPCA, who was also behind the film chosen to feature: 2017’s Christmas Inheritance.

MPCA also produced all three Christmas Prince films, The Princess Switch films, Holiday in the Wild, The Knight Before Christmas, and now A Castle For Christmas, making it a perfect fit to keep connecting this universe. “That one seed of an idea soon turned into fun opportunity to tie the various worlds together with small easter eggs from movie to movie,” said Atkins.

They moved on from characters watching each other on TV to featuring real concrete moments that were key in connecting the universes forever. In The Knight Before Christmas, Madison talks about their family visiting Aldovia while holding the iconic acorn ornament from A Christmas Prince. In A Christmas Prince: The Royal Baby, we get a map that reveals Aldovia and The Princess Switch’s Begravia are bordering countries. Eventually this led to in-person cameos with A Christmas Prince’s Queen Amber and King Richard showing up in The Princess Switch: Switched Again at Margaret’s coronation, and most recently: A Christmas Prince’s Count Simon showing up in The Princess Switch: Romancing The Star and The Princess Switch’s Mrs. Donatelli and Frank showing up in A Castle For Christmas. And this is just the tip of the Christmas tree… there are even more moments that connect these holiday worlds. See the full breakdown in the video, above.
