Hulu Renews Cult Classic Futurama For Two More Seasons

tv

The future is here! Hulu has officially renewed the cult classic animated series Futurama for two more seasons and 20 additional episodes. Hulu had originally made headlines in 2022 when they revived the popular series with a 20 episode order. With season 11 being a big hit (we’re talking Nielsen’s Top 10 Original Series list for six consecutive weeks!), fans were patiently awaiting season 12, set to premiere in 2024, but now they can add season 13 and 14 to wait for too!

After premiering in 1999, Futurama instantly became well received and gained an unwavering following of fans as well as critical acclaim, even taking home two Primetime Emmys for Outstanding Animated Program. But, after its initial run, the show experienced a rollercoaster of cancellations and renewals. Four direct-to-DVD releases later, the show was resurrected on Comedy Central from 2010 to 2013. After a ten year cryogenic freeze, Futurama was deemed nevertheless victorious by fans and emerged as a triumphant streaming series for Hulu in 2023.

The series is distinguished by its futuristic setting and satirical commentary on life in the present. Present day pizza-delivery boy Fry (Billy West) ends up accidentally freezing himself for 1,000 years and cryogenically preserving himself. When he is finally revived on December 31, 2999, he is taken in by his sole descendant Professor Hubert Farnsworth, an elderly and befuddled scientist who owns a small cargo delivery service called Planet Express. In this new, futuristic version of New York, Fry ends up befriending hard drinking robot Bender (John DiMaggio) and cyclops Leela (Katey Sagal) who he eventually falls in love with. Alongside accountant Hermes Conrad (Phil LaMarr), assistant Amy Wong (Lauren Tom), and alien lobster Dr. John Zoidberg (also Billy West), the trio embark on adventures that allow them to explore every corner of the universe.

Season 11 provided something for everyone, from the continuous love story of Fry and Leela to the secret history of evil Robot Santa. All the while, there was a new pandemic in town as the indistinguishable crew traversed the future of vaccines, bitcoin, cancel culture, and streaming TV. The best part? Fans can pick up right where they left off. With Season 11 being a smash hit, fans (including myself!) cannot wait to see what’s in store for the crew.

Catch up on all things Futurama, streaming exclusively on Hulu.
