Fiona Stands Up To David In Everyone Else Burns Episode 2

tv

Last Thursday, Everyone Else Burns premiered on The CW and we saw the Lewis family head off in different life directions. Now, it’s time to explore the characters in episode two.

Let’s start with our beloved matriarch Fiona. Her friendship with Melissa only grows when she asks Fiona if she wants a surplus of utility bags to run a soft side hustle. Reluctant at first because the order says women will be fulfilled from their duties at home, she agrees to take the bags since they could hold up to 50 preacher pamphlets. Later on, Melissa helps Fiona take business photos, which stands as a pivotal moment for her in standing up to David to pursue her ambitions. If you’re wondering what David thinks of all this, he actually supports her, but only when he realizes she will stand her ground no matter what. I adored this plotline and the friendship she’s created with Melissa because it’s exactly the type of empowerment we need to see.

Meanwhile, Rachel talks to her teacher who asks if her parents were proud of her grades, which, as we know from last week’s episode, they are not. Rachel still wants to pursue medicine and her teacher advises her to fill out an application to volunteer at a retirement home to gain work experience. But there’s one thing that she needs… a cellphone. Meanwhile, her friendship with Joshua grows as he leaves treats for her while she’s out ministering and even more so when he gives her a brand new phone for volunteering. Their growing friendship is so adorable to watch and you can’t help but root for them!

Early on, David initiates a family meeting to subjugate his family as he thinks they’re the reason he was not promoted to Elder. Rachel walks into the meeting and asks her father for a mobile phone to which David decides takes away her evenings for the week requiring her to do two hours of ministering. Shortly after, he gets a visit from his neighbor Elder Andrew, who asks David when he’ll be visiting Joel, a local man who’s gone through a terrible break up with Rachel’s teacher Miss Simmonds.

David decides to take Aaron to the preaching visit in order to guide him into the world of ministering. However, during the course of three visits, David isn’t respectful to Joel as he judges him and doesn’t treat Joel’s expensive furniture with proper care. David’s hopes that Aaron will idolize his father continue to just be hopes since Aaron’s drawings progressively get more violent when he draws David in an acid bath and being torn apart by animals.

We can see that David is still pretty arrogant and socially unaware that he comes across as tone-deaf to everyone around him. He makes small advancements in supporting his family, but bigger ones to disappoint them and has an obsessive need to one-up others so the church can promote him in the future.

In the end, Fiona’s business is doing amazing as the whole congregation bought and used the utility bags. Rachel is one step closer to becoming a normal teenager, Aaron continues his violent drawings, and David is still a complicated character.

Tune into a new episode of Everyone Else Burns every Thursday at 9:30pm ET on The CW.
