Gavin Casalegno and Sean Kaufman Open Up About That Iconic Dance Sequence At The End Of The Summer I Turned Pretty
It’s no secret that The Summer I Turned Pretty is filled with incredible musical moments. The season is soundtracked by musicians like Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Megan Thee Stallion, and BlackPink, but we see the cast showcase some of their musical talents as well. I still have Can’t Do Better by Kim Petras stuck in my head after Belly (Lola Tung) sings it in the car. Steven (Sean Kaufman) belts out a song in the shower, while Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) starts up some Grease karaoke at a house party. But when I hit up The Summer I Turned Pretty yellow carpet premiere in New York City, we had to talk about the most epic moment of all — the debutante escort dance!
While there’s some back and forth about who’s taking who to the debutante ball, we end up with both Jeremiah and Steven as escorts on the dance floor showing off for the debs. “Man, that was fun! That was my favorite scene to shoot, especially with Gavin. Me and him made that dance ourselves with a helpful wonderful choreographer over in North Carolina,” gushed Sean Kaufman on the yellow carpet.
“He’s a talented dancer,” Casalegno told me about Kaufman. “We just had a blast. Every second on that wood floor was my most favorite of the whole series. I'm excited for everyone to see it. It's gonna blow some minds.”
Kaufman opened up about just how meaningful the dance sequence was for him. “On the very last day of shooting Gavin and I did the escort dance and I remember when we finished filming our coverage […] Gavin looked at me and he asked the background if we could do it one more time just the two of us in front of everybody,” said Kaufman. “I was probably doing it in tears that entire time because doing it was so special. It meant so much and then to be doing it with Gavin just meant the world. We've become such close friends over the course of filming in the past year. It meant the world to me, not only to be there, but to be there with him.”
