The Penguin’s Mid-Season Trailer Dropped At New York Comic Con

Just four episodes in, The Penguin has solidified its legacy as a standalone within the substantial Batman universe. The show has bolstered an impressive 93% on Rotten Tomatoes and there are no signs of slowing the show’s popularity. With the show nowhere near done with its season and viewership continuing to grow, the weekly episodes are much anticipated.

Not only did she love the story and the franchise, but showrunner Lauren LeFranc revealed at The Penguin panel at New York Comic Con that witnessing Colin Farrell transform into Oz Cobb while filming The Batman solidified that she wanted to be a part of creating The Penguin. She recalled how he effortlessly slipped into the world of Gotham’s biggest, baddest gangster, despite the role being “light” in The Batman, according to Farrell. He explain that the film was obviously focused on Robert Pattinson’s iteration of Batman and his character of the Penguin was a stepping stone for Batman’s story — scarcely, or not at all, digging into who Oz Cobb is. LeFranc echoed Farrell’s sentiment explaining that she loves “having little moments within each episode that may not be the driving force, but adds so much detail to his character.”

In the series, Farrell was granted the opportunity to explore Oz’s relationships, especially with his mother, which Farrell found most enticing as “it’s a toxic love they have.” That toxic energy was something Farrell’s counterpart in the series Cristin Milioti was excited to sink her teeth into as well. “I’ve had the time of my life,” she shared. “I’ve been wanting to do something like this since I was little. It sounds crazy, but it’s true.” Milioti plays the prolific mob boss of Sofia Falcone, an integral part of Batman and Oz’s story. LeFranc was inspired by Rosemary Kennedy’s story for episode four, which dove deeper into her background, and she “wanted people to empathize with Sofia. That’s why I had her origin start [at Arkham Asylum].” As for Salvatore’s story, actor Clancy Brown gave a wink and a nod to the audience saying, “Sal’s been biting his tongue.”
