Deadpool and Wolverine Is The Ultimate Summer Blockbuster
It’s the ultimate team up of the summer as Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman join forces to save the world in Deadpool & Wolverine.
Wade Wilson is living a simple and aimless life after he’s rejected from joining the Avengers. It sends him down a spiral that finds him broken up with by Vanessa, retired from being the Merc with a Mouth, and working as a used car salesman. When the Time Variance Authority recruit him to safeguard the multiverse, it seems like his life finally has meaning. But when he learns it would mean his own world and the people he loves would cease to exist, he enlists the help of another multiverses Wolverine, an anchor being, to save his world.
Ryan Reynolds continues to prove he’s the literal embodiment of the hilarious Deadpool, while they manage to bring back Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in a way that does make sense thanks to multiple dimensions and the Time Variance Authority. The meta humor had me cracking up and I’m still not over Dancepool. With a fire soundtrack and epic cameos, Deadpool & Wolverine had all the goofy self-awareness that I love in my comic book adaptations that really stays true to the essence of the comics. It reminded me of She-Hulk at times, which I loved but also got a lot of flack for doing pretty much what this film does so well. There’s also an incredible heart in the film that allows both Deadpool and Wolverine to have their selfless world saving moments. My favorite message in this film was around Wolverine and how his mistakes in his past made him the hero they needed in the future. I thought that was a beautiful, full circle moment.
While you can still enjoy this film without knowing the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in full, there are some things that might not make sense without that. For instance, you really needed to know the Loki TV show to understand what’s going on with the Time Variance Authority, or there were in-jokes about things like Channing Tatum as Gambit that you’ll get if you know about MCU casting rumors.
All in all, Deadpool & Wolverine is the epitome of a summer blockbuster win. Reynolds and Jackman are comic book perfect in their roles as they balance meta and witty quips, bloody action, and a ton of heart. The marketing lived up to the hype and I was glad to see the movie before all the cameos were spoiled.
Deadpool & Wolverine is playing in theaters.
