Melissa Barrera and Josh Segarra Are Totally Down For A Scream VII Musical
Melissa Barrera and Josh Segarra play love interests Sam and Danny in Scream VI, but did you know the duo also have incredible musical chops?
That’s right! Segarra originated the role of Emilio Estefan in Broadway’s On Your Feet!, while Barrera was a contestant on the Mexican music competition show La Academia before breaking out in the movie adaptation of In The Heights. Kristen Maldonado of Pop Culture Planet spoke with them about the idea of Scream VII being a musical.
Segarra set the scene of what a musical route would look like. “I mean, do we go with… after everybody is killed, right? Just laid out. Ghostface just swipes everybody and all of a sudden you hear Danny come in. He's like, ‘Get on your feet! Bah doo bah dah dah dah!’” he sang to me during a Scream VI junket, calling out On Your Feet! musical numbers. “And everyone is slightly looking up, like, ‘Not now, Danny! Not now, man!’”
He continued: “Remember ‘Wrapped?’ Maybe we do ‘Wrapped.’ Ghostface’s walking around the city. Everybody's just getting wrapped up together. A real nice, flowy number. Everybody in their Ghostface garb flowing in the wind. That'd be really sweet.”
Barrera was totally on board. “Oh my God, I love that idea. That's so right. Josh is such a good singer too. I totally forgot. And Jasmin [Savoy Brown] too — and Mason [Gooding] is kind of musical. I think he can play the guitar,” she told me during a press junket for Carmen. “So it would actually work.”
She even pitched taking the musical to Broadway. “I would love it if there was like a musical for Broadway that they made. It would be really cool. I think it would have to be like [a] jukebox musical with 90s and 2000s punk rock or something like that,” Barrera said. “You know that song? I think it was called t.A.T.u, the two girls that sang. It was a duet and […] there's a song called ‘Not Gonna Get Us.’ If you do a cool arrangement of that song, I feel like it could fit really well.”
Scream VI is playing in theaters, while Barrera’s new film Carmen is in select New York and Los Angeles theaters.
