Here’s Everything You Missed From Netflix’s Drop 01 Event
If you’re a fan of animation, I got news for you!
In a similar fashion to Geeked Week ─ which Netflix confirmed will return sometime this year ─ and Tudum, Netflix launched their live streamed Drop 01 event focusing on new releases and first looks of its animation projects. The event showcased so much exciting news on their upcoming TV series from their rendition of Scott Pilgrim to the Castlevania spinoff. Pop Culture Planet contributor Paola Cardenas breaks down what you might have missed.
Hello Again, Friend of a Friend
Much like the original film, Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) tracks down the girl of his dreams, Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), who now ironically sells DVDs from Netflix, but is in for a rude awakening when he learns he has to defeat all her seven of her evil exes.
The new clip of Scott Pilgrim Takes Off shows Scott asking Julie (Aubrey Plaza) about Ramona and what she does. After learning she sells Netflix rentals, Scott goes back to his apartment where his roommate Wallace (Kieran Culkin) helps him pick out a movie to rent. Days go by as Scott waits by the door for Ramona to show up.
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off comes to Netflix on November 17.
Demon Hunter Dante Is Back
Netflix gave a brief first look into the new animated series Devil May Cry, based on the hit video game. The eight episode series will be produced by Adi Shankar, who also worked on Netflix’s Castlevania. Capcom and Studio Mir also join the project.
The teaser shows an intense fight scene where Dante, demon hunter and orphan, is escaping death by sword and firing off bullets from his signature two pistols. The short clip promises an intense battle between Dante and the dark spiritual forces of the demon realm.
Netflix has yet to release a date of this series, but teases “coming soon” in the short announcement clip.
A New Season of Sonic Prime Awaits
Sega fans are going crazy for the teaser of Sonic Prime Chapter 3 as it shows Sonic dealing with the fallout from destroying the Paradox Prism which wreaked havoc among Green Hill.
The first look also shows Nine, an alternate version of Tails Prower from another dimension, betraying Sonic and Shadow as he has all shards and knows where they belong. Will Sonic save the Shatterverse?
Stay tuned to Sonic Prime coming soon on Netflix.
A Frog Assassin Enters The World of Eden
An adaptation based on the Far Cry spin-off Blood Dragon, Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix showcases Dolph Laserhawk (Nathaniel Curtis) in his cyberpunk corrupted world of Eden where he’s locked up in its maximum security prison Supermaxx. As he “would rather be a corpse than work for Eden again,” he must now lead a team of outcasts on intense, risky undercover missions in order to survive.
Among the cast are Caroline Ford as The Warden, David Menkin as Rayman, Courtney Mae-Briggs as Jade, Glenn Wrage as Pay’J, and Daniel York Loh as Pagan Min.
Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix series hits Netflix on October 19.
Kyoto Wants to Know This Samurai
This new original animated series Blue Eye Samurai follows the story of Mizu, voiced by Maya Erskine, a biracial samurai warrior enraged by the men who took her mother. Mizu goes a bloody path of revenge with nothing but the strength and skill of her sword.
In the teaser, she states the men who took her mother will “all die by my hand.” With a determined attitude, Mizu faces the challenges that arise from her ventures. The Four Fangs seek her out to destroy her, but death amongst those men is the one thing she wants most.
Throughout her journey, she meets a noodle chef named Ringo, voiced by Masi Oka, who joins her in her vengeance and the blacksmith who taught her everything she knows, played by Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa. The series also stars Kenneth Branaugh, Brenda Song, Stephanie Hsu, and George Takei.
Blue Eye Samurai premieres on November 3 on Netflix.
Lara Croft Is Back to Save The World
Modeled after the iconic video game series, the trailer for Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft shows the treasure hunter Lara, played by Haley Atwell, breathing heavily as multiple scenes of her adventure are shown.
Not many details were shared, but Netflix says the show will be coming soon in 2024.
He-Man Defeats Scare Glow.. Or So He Thought
Following the 2021 Master of The Universe: Revelations, the sequel Master of The Universe: Revolution shows an epic battle between He-Man (Chris Wood), accompanied by his father, and Scare Glow (Tony Todd). After it seems he has defeated Scare Glow, the latter transforms himself into a huge spider-like creature and another battle awaits.
Produced by Kevin Smith, the series will follow He-Man’s efforts to protect the world of Eternia from the evil forces led by his enemies.
Masters of the Universe: Revolution will premiere in 2024 on Netflix.
Seven Minutes of Vampires, Blood, and Revenge
Netflix released the first seven minutes of the long-awaited spinoff series Castlevania: Nocturne. The clip shows young vampire hunter Richter Belmont (Edward Bluemel) and his mother Julie walking down the street as she tells him he’ll be safer in France until Olrox (Zahn McClarnon), a powerful Vampire Lord, shows up.
Julia and Olrox face off in an intense battle using their magic and physical weapons. Using a fire power triggered by her finger, she aims at Olrox as he screams. When black smoke dissipates, a massive snake arises. Richter tries to help his mother, but realizes his powers are too weak. “I'm sorry, Richter. I'm so sorry,” she utters as the snake's tooth stabs her to death. Olrox transforms back into his vampire form and formally introduces himself to Richter with an explanation for why he killed his mother. Faced with a mission, Richter boards the ship to France. Set during the French Revolution, Richter is determined to uphold his family’s legacy and defeat the all powerful Vampire ruler.
The series will take you on a journey delving deep into the trauma of Richter Elmont. Viewers are in for an emotional rollercoaster as they explore not only his emotional anguish, but the allies he meets such as the enchantingly gifted Maria Renard who also carries her own burdens of trauma during this period.
Pain, resilience, and the human spirit are filled in the Castlevania: Nocturne series premiere on September 28.
