From Sneaks to Doctor Who Season 2, Should You Add These To Your Watchlist?
From the tragic tale of a young pop star to a pair of designer shoes lost in New York City, here’s what you should add to your watchlist!
Doctor Who Season 2
The Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) is back on a new mission with companion Belinda (Varada Sethu). The two embark on a journey to return to Earth until a mysterious force gets in their way.
Though only the premiere episode is released right now, I have to gush about this rendition of Doctor Who. Gatwa is amazing and incredibly witty as The Doctor with the way he cares so deeply about others. Even if you know nothing about Doctor Who, this series will make you a bigger fan coming out of it. Varada and Gatwa have such brilliant chemistry on-screen and I loved watching them banter and bounce off one another. The Doctor also figures out a way to communicate with Belinda in a fun pattern to avoid any suspicion which I thought was so clever to watch. The premiere does a fantastic job at introducing us to a new storyline and I can’t wait to watch the upcoming episodes!
New episodes of Doctor Who season 2 are dropping on Disney+.
Sneaks
A pair of designer sneakers are separated by an evil villain, with one getting lost in New York City, in Sneaks. Now, he has to rescue his sister and the duo must return to their rightful owner.
The film is a nice story about resilience as the two sneakers do everything they can to find each other despite all their setbacks. The stacked voice cast including Anthony Mackie, Chloe Bailey, Laurence Fishburne, Martin Lawence, Roddy Rich, and more are the heart of the film with their humor and sensitivity. I really would’ve loved for the film to go deeper into sneaker culture as it only scratches the surface and for the sneaker’s owner Edson (Swae Lee) to be a more important part of the story since he also works at a youth center. That being said, the film still has many important messages for kids to hear and it’s a cute Toy Story-esque story. I also really enjoyed the original soundtrack with songs from Ella Mai, Young Miko, Rich, and more — thanks to DJ Mustard!
Watch Sneaks in theaters now.
The Carters: Hurts To Love You
The Carters: Hurts To Love You takes a deeper look into the life of young pop stars — Backstreet Boys’ Nick Carter and late younger brother Aaron Carter. It reveals the details of their childhood, their rise to fame, the trauma, and more told by the perspective of Aaron’s twin sister Angel.
The docuseries takes a delicate approach in tackling the issues all the siblings went through including alcoholism, drug abuse, depression, and neglect. It’s heartbreaking to see just how much Aaron and Nick went through, especially how Nick talks about chasing his parents' approval and Aaron’s spiral into drug abuse after his father’s passing. All of the details told by Angel about Aaron’s life reveal a lot more than what people knew and it was so shocking to see. As tragic as the story is, the ultimate takeaway of the series is to speak up about mental health for others to feel seen and heard. It’s a reminder that you’re not alone, it can get better, and you can break generational cycles.
The Carters: Hurts To Love You is out now on Paramount+.
