From Cuckoo to Trap, Should You Add These To Your Watchlist?

From serial killers to street racers, these movies had potential, but ultimately fell flat.

Cuckoo

I’ve got mixed feelings about Hunter Schafer’s new horror movie Cuckoo. In this film, Schafer plays a teen who reluctantly leaves America to live with her father’s new family in the German Alps. But when weird things start happening, she discovers her father’s boss has gotten her family involved in a shocking secret.

I had no idea where this movie was going for most of the run time, which definitely kept me surprised and on my toes. The vibe gave off 70s indie film and there were some tense moments and jump scares that got me. I found the first half to be too slow and convoluted with them trying to do way too much, but the reveals in the third act were really cool. They introduce these creatures that are really creepy and intriguing, but I wish we got to know more about them.

Cuckoo is playing in theaters.

One Fast Move

After being released from a military prison for street racing, a young man (KJ Apa) seeks out his estranged father (Eric Dane) to help him pursue his dream of becoming a professional motorcycle racer.

While One Fast Move poses an interesting plot and promises action, it falls flat on both. Though this is a redemption story, the stakes don’t feel high enough to motivate the characters. There is little to no chemistry between the love interests, and the dialogue feels forced and extremely unnatural. If you’re looking for high speed action, I’d skip this one.

One Fast Move is streaming on Prime Video.

M. Night Shyamalan’s new movie Trap is disappointing and feels like a huge waste of time. The story follows a kind, loving father who takes his daughter to see her favorite artist in concert. Upon arriving, he notices an unusual amount of security and commotion in the crowd. His friendly demeanor somehow leads him to discover from a crew member that the entire event is a trap set up for a serial killer named “The Butcher.” The twist? The serial killer is none other than the father himself.

This revelation leaves him stuck as he tries to navigate his two worlds colliding. We watch as Josh Hartnett switches between a loving father and a tactical sociopath. While the premise sounds intriguing, the movie is ultimately a complete letdown. Not only is the entire plot given away in the trailer, but there’s also no cat-and-mouse chase you’d expect from a film like this. As a result, there’s no suspense or thrill of discovery. The movie is missing the layers and twists that would elevate it to a suspenseful thriller.

Trap is playing in theaters.
