Fool Me Once Will Have You Guessing Until The Very End

When Joe (Richard Armitage) is murdered, his wife Maya Stern (Michelle Keegan) is grieving his loss while trying to take care of their daughter. Maya installs a nanny-cam to keep tabs on her daughter, when she sees a clip of her husband holding the little girl. Detective Sami Kierce (Adeel Akhtar) comes in to investigate Joe’s untimely death while dealing with some secrets of his own. The timing is suspicious as Maya’s sister was murdered only a few months prior. Detective Kierce attempts to uncover the truth and who is hiding more than they lead on in Netflix’s new series Fool Me Once.

This eight episode series hooks you in at the very beginning, which is no surprise given that Fool Me Once is based on Harlan Coben’s best selling novel. Coban has had incredible literary success, publishing over thirty five novels. His skill for storytelling has translated seamlessly on screen with eight adapted series and a movie.

Early on, we are introduced to Maya’s military background that serves her well in protecting herself and her daughter, but seemingly ended abruptly due to some grave mistake. She is strong willed, but grieving the loss of two of the people closest to her in a short amount of time. Keegan plays her in such a way that has you trusting and believing her at every step, even if you shouldn’t. As a protagonist, you empathize with her, but question some of the decisions she makes.

As a viewer, you are trying to piece together the events predating Joe’s death while being introduced to a wide cast of characters. Each character is related to Maya in some way. It’s complex enough to not be predictable, but not too confusing to the point of not being able to follow along. There’s something about a British accent just adds another layer of intrigue.

The series is well paced, revealing secrets every episode without giving away the ultimate truth we come to know until the end. Though Michelle Keegan has had success in other acting roles including soap operas, this series is her global breakout. I’m sure we will be seeing more of the actress on our screens in the near future. If you’re looking for a murder mystery to get you through this long winter, look no further.

Fool Me Once is streaming on Netflix.
