Did You Notice These 10 Easter Eggs In Heartstopper Season 2?
There’s no denying that Heartstopper gained tons of new fans with its 2022 debut, but the series was an extra treat for fans of the original graphic novels by Alice Oseman. The second season came out this week on Netflix and we couldn’t help but smile when noticing these Easter eggs. Pop Culture Planet contributor Jordan Bohan identifies these can’t miss moments.
Alice Oseman’s Books
Book lover Isaac, played by Tobie Donovan, is seen throughout the season reading a plethora of books. While in a bookstore in Paris, we see a few of Oseman’s books on the shelf and the character grabs one as well.
Marvel Callout
In a seemingly throwaway line, Charlie says to Nick, “I did warn you I’m not a fan of Marvel movies.” This is a nod to Joe Locke, who plays Charlie, as he has recently been cast in an unnamed role in the Marvel Universe. The actor was cast in the Disney+ series Agatha: Coven of Chaos, which serves as a sequel to WandaVision.
Movie Theater Sign
In episode 3, Tao and Elle go on their first date to the movies. At the cinema, the sign says “Auteurs Season.” Auteur is what a director is referred to when so much of their distinctive creative style is embedded in their show or movie. This is referring to Alice Oseman and her individual style that is so ingrained in the show.
Taylor Swift Album Cover
Episode 7 starts with Tara and Darcy having a sleepover at Tara’s house. The couple are kissing in bed when Tara’s mother interrupts and Darcy falls to the floor alongside the Folklore album cover poster on the wall. Later in the season, the couple have a romantic moment while “Seven” by Taylor Swift plays.
Wave Mural
In the first season, we are introduced to the wave mural in the Truham school hallway. This is a nod to Alice Oseman’s illustration style, but it also foreshadows the trip to the beach that Nick and Charlie go on at the end of season one. Some new elements were added to the mural this season, including a little boat and some sparkle to align with the characters’ growth.
Volume 3 Cover
Season 2 of Heartstopper is largely based on the third volume of the graphic novels. During their trip to Paris, we see Nick and Charlie wearing their cover art outfits — backpacks and all.
Elle and Tao’s Prom Moment
Elle and Tao made their relationship official this season, attending the prom together. They have a celebratory moment in the middle of the crowd as they dance together. This moment is a callback to season one when Tara and Darcy shared a public kiss at Harry’s birthday party.
Baby Queen Cameo
Baby Queen, who has been the star of the Heartstopper soundtrack, made a special appearance in season two playing live music at the prom.
William Gao’s Band
William Gao, who plays Tao, has a band with his younger sister called Wasia Project. One of their songs called “ur so pretty” is featured in the final scene of the season.
Books, Books, and More Books!
There are so many books featured throughout the season and, if you look closely, many relate to their character’s storylines. At the bookshop in Paris, Nick is taking photos of Charlie while he looks at “The Swimming-Pool Library” by Alan Hollinghurst. The novel is about the friendship of two men and gay life before the AIDS epidemic.
Throughout season 2, we see Isaac explore his identity and relationship with romance. He comes to the realization that he may be asexual or aromantic. As the group is arriving to help with prom set up, Isaac is seen reading “Summer Bird Blue,” a novel by Akema Dawn Bowman. It follows a character named Rumi as she explores where she falls on the spectrum of asexuality and aromanticism.
