Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo Shine In Wicked Trailer
Welcome to Oz! Wicked fans, today’s the day as Universal Pictures has released the first official trailer for the film adaptation of one of Broadway's finest. That’s right, it’s the untold story of the witches of Oz, with Elphaba played by Grammy and Tony winner Cynthia Erivo, and Glinda played by Grammy and multi-platinum recording artist Ariana Grande.
The trailer is sparkling with footage of Oz, as the world is brought to life with vibrant colors and so much magic — from flying monkeys to silver slippers, even the glittering yellow brick road. We see the two frenemies make their first encounter at Shiz University and the moment Elphaba receives her iconic black witch hat. The trailer includes a snippet of Grande performing Glinda's signature song “Popular" and Erivo belting out the epic number that concludes the first act of the musical "Defying Gravity." It’s an adventure of a lifetime and, of course, there's tons of their signature colors green and pink.
Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh is playing Shiz University’s regal headmistress Madame Morrible, with Bridgerton star Jonathan Bailey as the charming and carefree Prince Fiyero. There’s SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical’s Ethan Slater as Boq and Saturday Night Live stand out Bowen Yang as Pfannee.
Directed by Jon M. Chu, the filmmaker behind Crazy Rich Asians and In the Heights, this two-part film is a passion project for all involved. Universal also posted an emotional featurette showcasing the love behind the film. “I love her so much, I’m going to take such good care of her,” promises Grande, with a teary eyed Erivo expressing, “I never thought in my lifetime that I would get to be part of something like this.”
This is a moment we've all been waiting for — Wicked is coming to theaters on November 27.
But just wait — if you're too excited and feel you have what it takes to be part of the glitter and magic at Shiz University and learn from Madame Morrible, head over to Shiz University’s website and apply for this fall. Here's her message:
