You’re Cordially Invited Is A Wedding Nightmare Full Of Chaotic Fun!

Weddings can be a day of joy — or utter chaos — and that’s the case in You’re Cordially Invited. Reese Witherspoon plays Margot who is eager to plan her little sister’s perfect wedding, while Will Ferrell is Jim, a devoted father who will do anything for his bride-to-be daughter. But when their destination wedding venue double books the two weddings, it unleashes a whole new level of chaos.

Witherspoon and Ferrell are worthy adversaries as they tap into their fears of loneliness and personal ties to the venue to give their relatives the most ideal weddings at any cost. From alligators in suites to smashed wedding cakes, that’s just the tip of the iceberg as this duo turns a romantic weekend into a full out war. While their chemistry worked perfectly as enemies, I found that their leap to romance at the end didn’t work and felt unnecessary.

Geraldine Viswanathan brings a quirky energy to her role as Jim’s daughter Jenni, balancing off of Ferrell well. Their father-daughter relationship is sweet, if not slightly cringey. Stony Blyden plays her music loving fiancé Oliver. Despite wanting to get married young, they learn they might not have it all figured out. Then there’s Meredith Hagner as Neve, Margot’s younger sister. The sisters come from a family that is very critical and judgmental, but find unity in finally accepting each other. Jimmy Tatro plays Neve’s Chippendales dancer fiancé Dixon who goes along with whatever she wants. Typically Tatro is a comedy highlight in everything he’s in, but unfortunately he’s wasted in You’re Cordially Invited. They don’t give him very much to do besides being Neve’s groom. Through the ups and downs of this chaotic wedding weekend, everyone comes out of the experience having learned lessons for the better.

There are plenty of funny scenes and the characters get a lot of time to really be explored, but the film does feel long. At an hour and 50 minutes, some of the sabotages between Witherspoon and Ferrell start to get dragged out and could’ve easily been trimmed down by about 20 minutes.

All in all, You’re Cordially Invited is a fun wedding romp with a cast that works well together. With a tighter script and giving some players a little more to work with comedically, they could’ve taken the story to the next level.

You’re Cordially Invited is out now on Prime Video.
