15 Most Anticipated Films In The 2024 Cannes Film Festival Line-Up

The Cannes Film Festival is right around the corner and Pop Culture Planet will be there to keep you updated! The 2024 slate was announced and there are a bunch of buzzy and much talked about titles set to premiere. Pop Culture Planet contributor Jordan Bohan shares what Cannes premieres you should add to your watch list. 

Anora — Anora, a young sex worker from Brooklyn, gets her chance at a Cinderella story when she meets and impulsively marries the son of an oligarch. Once the news reaches Russia, her fairytale is threatened as the parents set out for New York to get the marriage annulled. Cast: Mikey Madison, Yuriy Borisov, and Mark Eydelshteyn.

The Apprentice — A dive into the underbelly of the American empire. It charts a young Donald Trump’s ascent to power through a Faustian deal with the influential right-wing lawyer and political fixer Roy Cohn. Cast: Sebastian Stan, Jeremy Strong, Maria Bakalova.

Bird — Twelve year old Bailey lives with her single dad Bug and brother Hunter in a squat in North Kent. Bug doesn’t have much time for his kids and Bailey who is approaching puberty seeks attention and adventure elsewhere. Cast: Jason Buda, Jasmine Jobson, James Nelson Joyce, Frankie Box, Barry Keoghan, Franz Rogowski, and Nykiya Adams.

Emilia Perez — Overqualified and undervalued, Rita is a lawyer at a large firm that is more interested in getting criminals off the hook than bringing them to justice. One day, she is given an unexpected way out, when cartel leader Manitas hires her to help him withdraw from his business and realize a plan he has been secretly preparing for years: to become the woman he has always dreamt of being. Cast: Adriana Paz, Edgar Ramirez, Mark Ivanir, Zoe Saldana, Karla Sofia Gascon, and Selena Gomez.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga — As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home. Cast: Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth, Alyala Browne, Tom Burke, and Elsa Pataky.

Horizon — Oscar-winning director Kevin Costner chronicles the incredible epic journey of the expansion of the American West, before and after the Civil War. Between the Native Americans who saw their lands getting colonized and those who were determined to settle there, sometimes at any cost, history is being written. In a flamboyant fresco where multiple destinies intertwine, dreams and hopes face obstacles and cruelty to offer a cinematic spectacle of exceptional scope and emotional depth. Cast: Kevin Costner, Sienna Miller, Abbey Lee, Isabelle Fuhrman, Jena Malone, Ella Hunt, Wase Chief, Hayes Costner, Sam Worthington, and Luke Wilson.

Kinds of Kindness Three stories revolve around a man who tries to take control of his own life, a policeman whose wife seems like a different person, and a woman who searches for someone with a special ability. Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos return with this new film hot off of their Oscar wins. Cast: Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Joe Alwyn, Margaret Qualley, Hunter Schafer, Willem Dafoe, Hong Chau, Mamadou Athie, and Keke Palmer. 

Oh, Canada — A famed Canadian documentary filmmaker gives a final interview to one of his former students to tell the whole truth about his life. A confession filmed right in front of his wife. Cast: Richard Gere, Uma Therman, Jacob Elordi, Victoria Hill, and Michael Imperiolo.

Parthenope — The long journey of Parthenope’s life, from her birth in 1950 till today. A feminine epic, devoid of heroism but brimming with an inexorable passion for freedom, Naples, and the faces of love — all those true, pointless, and unspeakable loves. The perfect Capri summer, the lightheartedness of youth. Which ends in ambush. And then all the others—the Neapolitans, men and women, observed and loved, disillusioned and vital, their waves of melancholy, their tragic ironies and dejected glances. Life, be it ordinary or memorable, knows how to be very long. The passing of time offers up a vast repertoire of emotions. And there in the background, so close and so very far, is Naples, this ineffable city that bewitches, enchants, screams, laughs, and always knows how to hurt you. Megalopolis — The much anticipated and self-funded film by Francis Ford Coppola makes its world debut at Cannes. An architect wants to rebuild New York City as a utopia following a devastating disaster. Cast includes Zendaya, Adam Driver, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Grace VanderWaal, Nathalie Emmanuel, Chloe Fineman, Cate Blanchett, Jude Law, Oscar Isaac, Jessica Lange, and more. Cast: Adam Driver, Giancarlo Esposito, Mathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia Labeouf, Jon Voight, Jason Schwartzman, Talia Shire, Grace Vaderwaal, Laurence Fishburne, Kathryn Hunter, and Dustin Hoffman.

Rumors — At their annual G7 summit, the seven leaders of the world’s wealthiest liberal democracies get lost in the woods at night while attempting to draft their provisional statement. Cast: Cate Blanchett, Roy Dupis, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Charles Dance, Takehiro Hira, Denis Menochet, Rolando Ravello, Zlatko Buric, and Alicia Vikander.

The Shrouds — Karsh, 50, is a prominent businessman. Inconsolable since the death of his wife, he invents GraveTech, revolutionary and controversial technology that enables the living to monitor their dear departed in their shrouds. One night, multiple graves, including that of Karsh’s wife, are desecrated. Karsh sets out to track down the perpetrators. Cast: Sandrine Holt, Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger, and Guy Pearce.

Wild Diamond — A contemporary coming-of-age story about a young girl who blossoms through a virtual persona on social media. Liane lives with her mother and little sister in Fréjus, on the Côte d'Azur. She is obsessed with her physical appearance and dreams of becoming famous. Eventually she discovers reality TV as a possible springboard for a career. Liane gleefully responds to a casting call for Miracle Island. Cast: Malou Khebizi, Idir Azougli, Andrea Bescond, Ashley Romano, and Alexis Manenti.

The Balconettes — During a heat wave in Marseille, three roommates are cooped up in their apartment. From the balcony they look out at their mysterious neighbor, about whom they indulge in all sorts of fantasies. However, late into the night, an ordinary conflict turns into a bloodbath. Cast: Noemie Merlant, Shouheila Yacoub, and Sandra Codreanu.
