Wolf Like Me Is A Sheep In Wolf’s Clothing
Led by Josh Gad and Isla Fisher, Wolf Like Me is about two people who fear their baggage is too much to bear. Gary is struggling to connect with his daughter after his wife’s death, while Mary is hiding a big secret. After a terrifying car accident, the two connect and start a complicated relationship, with Mary literally sprinting away whenever they get too close.
A genre-bending romance, Wolf Like Me is funny and heartfelt as it attempts to bring us a different take on a classic horror creature. Instead of focusing on the monster within, they zero in on two people who want to find someone they can be their true selves with. The core of this story is about connection and finding your family.
The six episode series is written, directed, and created by Abe Forsythe who was behind the genre-bending film Little Monsters with Lupita Nyong’o. Unfortunately, Wolf Like Me doesn’t bring the new fresh take that Little Monsters did to the genre its tackling. When it comes to the genre twist, the show is heavy handed and the title alone spoils what’s to come without actually delivering. Wolf Like Me feels very subdued and we don’t get to see much of the “wolf within.”
Perhaps Wolf Like Me would’ve been more successful and could’ve been taken to new heights if it was a movie instead of a TV series. The episodes feel dragged out and lacking any real stakes to push us forward. While they have set up a few things to explore if we get a second season, there doesn’t feel like much urgency for one.
Wolf Like Me is currently streaming on Peacock.
