Did The Scream VI Trailer Tease A Ghostface Cult?

This is a Ghostface like we’ve never seen before!

The new trailer for Scream VI takes our new Woodsboro survivors — Sam (Melissa Barrera), Tara (Jenna Ortega), and twins Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown) and Chad (Mason Gooding) — out of the small town and into the big city. As they try to find anonymity in New York City, they come across a new killer (or killers?), Scream 4’s Kirby Reed (Hayden Panettiere), and a shrine dedicated to Ghostface’s history.

Last year’s Scream requel set up a new cast of characters with close connections to the original Ghostface and his victims, while exploring meta commentary on reboot culture and toxic fandoms. Based on the reveal of that Ghostface, it’s clear Billy Loomis has fans. Now in Scream IV, there are a lot of new faces joining veterans like Courteney Cox including Jack Champion, Henry Czerny, Liana Liberato, Dermot Mulroney, Devyn Nekoda, Tony Revolori, Josh Segarra, and Samara Weaving. The trailer also prominently highlights a shrine to the Woosboro killer filled with items from every movie in the franchise. Could this new film take a page from the Cult of Chucky and introduce us to a group of killers so obsessed with Ghostface that they want to finish what he started?

If that’s the case, what would that mean for Sam, who is Billy Loomis’ daughter? It was teased in 2022’s Scream that she felt his dark energy and that seems to continue in this film. “I had this secret. There’s a darkness inside of me. It followed me here and it’s gonna keep coming for us,” says Sam in the trailer. Could this put her closer to the center of this story than it might seem? Only time will tell.

Scream VI will hit theaters on March 10. In the meantime, check out our review of 2022’s Scream, below:
