Maika Monroe and Director David Robert Mitchell Reunite For Surprising It Follows Sequel They Follow
There’s no denying the 2014 horror film It Follows quickly became a cult classic amongst horror aficionados. With its innovative premise and tone, distinctive cinematography, and metaphors that transcend throughout the film, It Follows remains a standalone film that people frequently reference as a horror masterpiece. The film ends on a rather finalized note, but I believe the saying is good things come in pairs, and now it’s been announced that It Follows director David Robert Mitchell and the film’s protagonist Maika Monroe will reunited nearly 10 years after the film’s release for a sequel titled They Follow.
Neon, the studio behind the 2019 Oscar-winning thriller Parasite, will co-produce the movie and release it domestically. Mitchell will return as the writer and director for the sequel, while Monroe reprises her role as Jay Height. The first film follows carefree and shy teenager Jay who sleeps with her new boyfriend for the first time. But it turns out she is now the recipient of a fatal curse that is passed from victim to victim via sexual intercourse. Jay learns quickly that death will creep mercilessly toward her disguised as either a friend or a stranger. Her friends don't believe her at first and assume she’s paranoid, but as they begin to see the phantom apparitions too, they join efforts to help her flee the curse.
They Follow is set to begin production in early 2024 and will presumably follow Monroe's character Jay, succeeding the events that took place in the original. In the meantime, you can watch the first film on Netflix.
