Universal Music Group Removes Audios From TikTok

Universal Music Group has decided to remove all of its artists’ music from TikTok as of this Thursday. UMG’s artists consist of Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj, Drake, Taylor Swift, and more.

Earlier in the week, UMG had released an open letter to the platform accusing TikTok of poor payment and management against AI generated recordings of its artists. The platform has been used by music artists to help promote their new songs or reintroduce forgotten favorites. TikTok addressed the letter citing the music group put “their own greed above the interests of artists and songwriters.”

In the end, no deal could be made between the two parties and users experienced the mass removal of sounds from their videos early Thursday. Users have opened the debate on whether UMG’s decision helps artists or hinders those who rely on TikTok as a music discovery platform.
