The Best TV Shows of 2024

Witches, vampires, and the sinister A, the writers of Pop Culture Planet are sharing the Best Of 2024.

Agatha All Along

It was Agatha All Along who would give us one of Marvel’s best releases of the year. Kathryn Hahn serves greatness as Agatha Harkness—she’s funny, manipulative, and intensely likable.

The cast delivers, from Patti LuPone to Joe Locke, with each witch having a special identity as they go on a quest where they discover themselves.

- Makkedah Ramsey

Chucky

Chucky season 3 part 2 ups the ante as Brad Dourif returns in live-action as the Ghost of Chucky, coming face to face with Damballa, and beating death once and for all. Zackary Arthur even delivers an impressive impersonation of the red-headed killer.

Full of blood, ghosts, and campy humor, Don Mancini continues to take the legacy of Chucky to the next level with his creativity and ability to leave viewers surprised every season. With a shocking cliffhanger, I can’t be the only one praying that the story continues in movie form after its untimely cancellation.

Dead Boy Detectives

Set in the world of Netflix’s The Sandman, Dead Boy Detectives was cancelled way too soon. Dark and whimsical, Charles (Jayden Revri) and Edwin’s (George Rexstrew) friendship is the heart of the series. The series perfectly balanced its supernatural mystery of the week format, while diving deeper into its quirky cast of characters.

English Teacher

A hilarious and fresh take on the high school sitcom genre, English Teacher was deservedly this year’s comedy underdog.

Created by and starring Brian Jordan Alvarez, English Teacher follows Evan Marquez, an English teacher in Austin, Texas, who often finds himself balancing the students and parents in high school.

Fallout

There is something for everyone in Fallout. In a post-apocalyptic Los Angeles, citizens protect themselves in underground bunkers. It’s a slow burn, but Fallout’s allure, mystique, and universe building is something to be in awe of. It scratched everyone’s video game-turned-TV series itch as we wait for the third season of The Last of Us, and it didn’t disappoint.

From Season 3

FROM puts us at the center of a mystery in a nightmarish town that traps all those who enter. Following season 2's shocking cliffhanger, escape becomes a very real — but dangerous — possibility as the town’s true nature comes into focus.

Season 3 brings more questions and more answers as the town works to break Boyd and the residents that will keep you on the edge of your seat. There’s more lore introduced around the sinister monsters, while we learn certain characters are reincarnations of people past with specific goals connected to the town. Lucky for us, a fourth season is already in the works on MGM+!

Hacks Season 3

HBO Max’s smashing success Hack came in swinging in season 3. Deborah (Jean Smart) is riding high off the success of her standup special, while Ava (Hannah Einbinder) is back in Los Angeles pursuing new writing opportunities. That is until they find each other again at a comedy convention.

The series served as a beautiful tribute to womanhood, specifically highlighting the experiences of a woman navigating the comedy scene within the brutal entertainment industry.

Hazbin Hotel

In Hazbin Hotel, princess of Hell Charlie Morningstar (Erika Henningsen) opens a hotel in hopes of saving the demons from a yearly extermination imposed by angels to reduce overpopulation.

With a focus on second chances and found family, Hazbin delivers a unique take on the afterlife with the demons of Hell being much nicer than the angels in Heaven. Between the incredible cast of Broadway veterans, catchy music, and stunning animation, the NSFW animated musical balances raunchy and wholesome elements. The jaw-dropping lore explores flawed but still redeemable characters you can’t help but connect with.

Interview With The Vampire Season 2

Following their attempt to kill Lestat, Louis and Claudia find themselves at the Theatre des Vampires in Paris, a vampire coven led by Armand. There they deal with grief, finding their purpose, and remain haunted by Lestat. Meanwhile in the present-day, hidden truths and complexities are uncovered by Daniel’s interview.

Interview with The Vampire season 2 ups the nuance of these characters, allowing the actors to deliver tense and emotional performances. The stakes are higher than ever as we learn the truth behind some of the inconsistencies in Louis’ story.

Life & Beth Season 2

Much like Amy Schumer’s brilliant stand up, her original series Life & Beth offers the same hilarity, but with a softer, subtle introspective look into Amy’s childhood and how it shaped her into the woman she is today. If you’re also looking for more reasons to love Michael Cera, Life & Beth is it.

Nobody Wants This

There’s been a lot of discourse in recent years about whether the rom-com is dead or back. Kristen Bell and Adam Brody’s undeniable chemistry proves that the romantic comedy is not only alive and thriving, but can be an Internet sensation and instant hit. Nobody Wants This is the series we all needed to show us that life doesn’t end after your twenties and relationships don’t always get easier as you get older.

One Day

If you want a limited series that is going to absolutely shatter your heart into a million pieces and leave you crying on the couch, look no further than Netflix’s One Day. Adapted from the David Nichols’ love story adored by book fans, it’s brought to the screen by Leo Woodall and Ambika Mod. This decades-long relationship teeters on the edge of true love and heartbreak.

Pop Star Academy: KATSEYE

Pop Star Academy: KATSEYE gave us an inside look on the formation of the fast-rising global girl group originally formed under Dream Academy. From the underdogs to the ones who debuted, the show gave us a real sense at the standards HYBE and Geffen Records were looking for to form the perfect group with plenty to root for. Throughout the drama, grueling evaluations, emotional eliminations, and dazzling mission performances, the friendships between the contestants is the most heartwarming aspect of the series. If KATSEYE has zero fans, I’m dead.

- Paola Cardenas

Presumed Innocent

Legal thriller fans were pleased by Apple TV+’s adaptation of Scott Turow’s Presumed Innocent. Jake Gyllenhaal leads the cast with a performance demanding to be seen. He single handedly carried the season with a palpable tension warranting a second season.

- Jordan Bohan

Pretty Little Liars: Summer School

It’s a shame this series got canceled, because it had so much promise! With subtle — and sometimes not-so-subtle nods — to the original series, Pretty Little Liars: Summer School had a gruesome horror element that the original show never had. Audiences fell in love with this friend group, with Bailee Madison and Chandler Kinney particularly shining in their roles. Perhaps the television gods will save this show, and we’ll see the notorious A wreak havoc on the friends on a different streaming platform.

- Ally Bonsall

Somewhere Somebody Season 3

Among a sea of formulaic streaming content, Somebody Somewhere stands out. It’s third and final season was a beautiful tribute to the characters that made me fall in love with this show.

The brilliant Bridget Everett plays Sam, who struggles to fit her hometown's mold. Singing is her saving grace and leads her to discover herself and a community of outsiders. It shows that finding your people — and finding your voice — is possible.

Tell Me Lies S2

College stories are hard to come by, especially ones that honestly depict the extreme emotions harbored by young adults during such a pivotal time in their lives. Tell Me Lies season 2 blends the realism with intense drama, making it one of the most addicting and sexy shows out there.

- Jordan Bohan

The Penguin

Max’s The Penguin redefines the classic Batman villain with a dark, street-level crime drama that centers on Oswald “Oz” Cobb, played by a mesmerizing Colin Farrell. The show delves into Oz’s ambition, insecurity, and ruthlessness as he grapples with his tragic past and navigates a gritty, dangerous underworld. Farrell gives a multifaceted performance that bends vulnerability with menace.

Equally Impressive is Cristin Milioti’s portrayal of Sofia Falcone, a formidable adversary for Oz. Their complex dynamic drives much of the series, with Sofia’s intelligence and calculating nature challenging Oz’s erratic ambition. The Penguin proves that Gotham doesn’t need Batman to keep audiences on the edge of their seats. It’s a fascinating character study wrapped in a gritty crime drama, with Farrell leading the charge as one of the most complex and entertaining villains on TV today.

- Katharine Santos

The Way Home

The Way Home has continued to capture our hearts as they explore the complex and mysterious multigenerational drama of the Landry family. Season 2 found us diving further into the mystery around what really happened to Kat’s missing younger brother Jacob.

The stakes get taken to the next level in the jaw-dropping season 2 finale as we get more answers, more questions, and new mysteries set up for season 3. This includes the shocking reveal that Colton is a time traveler!
