From Dead Angels to Lute’s Dark Future, Hazbin Hotel Has A Lot To Explore For Season 2

The first season of Hazbin Hotel has landed on Prime Video and fans are loving the continuation from the 2019 viral YouTube pilot! Pop Culture Planet’s Kristen Maldonado spoke with the cast and creatives about the new additions to the Heaven vs Hell story, Lute’s dark future, and dream season 2 cameos.

“It’s been unreal,” creator Vivienne Medrano told me about the support from fans. “We’re in a golden age of people making their own projects and them succeeding online and finding their audience. I’m honored because Hazbin… there was a universe where we pitched it around to some places and nobody really knew what to do with it. It was a musical, raunchy R-rated thing that also centers a lot around LGBT stories and has very complicated characters that are flawed and their flaws are the point and on display.”

Medrano “learned so much” from making the original YouTube pilot. “That was the first major project I'd ever made and worked with such a massive team. It took about two years and it was just a huge mess but in the best of ways. It resulted in something really special. I learned so much from that that I then carried into my other series Helluva Boss” she said. “That was really special because that taught me so much about production. I really found myself as a writer in that time as well, so I think that was really, really important development for what eventually would lead to the Hazbin series.”

At the end of episode one, we’re introduced to a new concept, which is that Angels can be killed. “I'm really excited because that's something that we reveal in the first episode. The season is about figuring out what that means for Hell and Heaven and how that changes the game in terms of these exterminations that have been happening for so long,” Medrano shared. “I'm really excited for people to see how that manifests in the overall narrative and how it immediately gives an element of wonder. Like what is Hell going to do with that information? Do they know? What's going to happen there?”

What we ultimately end up learning in episode six and beyond is that Angels can be killed by their own angelic weapons and that Heaven doesn’t actually seem to know what’s going on in its realm. Not only is Adam (Alex Brightman) leading a covert mission to kill Hell’s residents that hasn’t been approved, but no one actually knows what requirements get them admitted into Heaven.

By the time we get to the finale, the citizens of Hell have joined forces to fight off Adam, Lute, and the exorcist Angels from Heaven — and it seems like they’re winning! But this is just the first battle in the ultimate war between Heaven and Hell. The season ends on a jaw-dropping cliffhanger with so many big reveals. Alastar may have deadlier aspirations than it once seemed and Sir Pentious’ selfless death proved once and for all that you can be redeemed. That’s right, he ends up an Angel in Heaven! We also learn that it wasn’t Adam spearheading this whole plan. Instead, we get the shocking reveal of Lilith herself in a sinister team up with Lute. What’s next? Jessica Vosk, who voices Lute, teases something HUGE…

Based on a conversation Vosk had with the creative team during the New York premiere, she learned her character Lute may be more important than anyone might have realized. “You will slowly see things being set up with Lute that come to fruition in a large way in season two. She's one of the Angels that you see for one of those reasons when it comes to the arc of what happens between Heaven and Hell. I didn't even realize the amount of badassery that I'm going into when it comes to season two, so it's a very, very cool,” she revealed. “I get to fulfill my villain-era Taylor Swift fantasy. She's a ‘Mastermind,’ babe. Shall I play all the T-Swift? I'm ready to play some ‘Karma.’”

Looking ahead to the future, Medrano has “the show relatively mapped out.” “I know at minimum how many seasons I would need, which is more than two. Honestly, the next part of the story where it goes after season 2 is really important to me,” she said. “I think things really shift at that point so I'm excited to see what the future of the show will be.”

The team has already started casting for season 2, with Medrano revealing it will have “a small roster of new characters.” When it comes to dream cameos, she and the cast have some exciting ideas. “A big one for me personally is Nathan Lane. I’ve been a fan of him for forever,” she shared. “He’s got one of the most iconic voices ever in musical theater. He’s awesome, so maybe someday!”

“One person that I love is Lea Salonga. But she has such an angelic voice, maybe she could come in as an angel. My angel. Save Niffty,” said Kimiko Glenn, while Blake Roman added: “Alex Newell. That's who I'll say. I want Alex Newell on Hazbin Hotel and you heard it here first. I love her. She's so great.”
