Secret Level Anthology Teases Iconic Games Coming To Life at New York Comic Con
Secret Level is coming in hot! It’s about to be a treat for gamers everywhere, all thanks to the brilliant minds of Dave Wilson and Tim Miller, who are taking on the challenge of bringing these characters to life in their short anthology series. That’s the thing about Secret Level — it’s a secret. But here’s the scoop we picked up at the New York Comic Con panel.
From the creators of Love, Death & Robots, we’re getting an explosive series that’s bringing some of the biggest names in video games to our screens: PAC-MAN, Warhammer 40,000, Concord, Mega Man, Unreal Tournament, New World: Aeternum, Armored Core, Spelunky, Honor of Kings, Sifu, Dungeons & Dragons, The Outer Worlds, Crossfire, Exodus, and even a selection of PlayStation games and characters.
Miller and Wilson have been deep in the gaming world for years — not just as fans, but as creators who know what makes these stories tick. Miller, who’s got a long resume with games like Mass Effect 2, Star Wars: The Old Republic, and Halo Wars, even calls himself a “nerd.” It’s no wonder gaming companies trust them with their IPs. “We built on relationships from our 30 years at Blur, with people who trust us not to mess things up like Hollywood often does — well, except Amazon, because Fallout was perfect,” Miller said. They’ve got a love for games that lets them honor the work they’re given.
Some companies let them take the wheel completely, while others were more involved in shaping the stories. Wilson put it best. “It belongs to you more than it belongs to us,” he said. “We just want to make sure we leave it better than we found it.” They’re not trying to rewrite these worlds, just tell stories that stay true to them. Except for PAC-MAN — that one’s going off the rails, and Miller admits he’s the most nervous about it.
This show is definitely something new, but the success of Love, Death & Robots made it easier for Miller and Wilson to get people on board with their vision. Miller said, “People in Hollywood are like everyone else who loves games. Even if they don’t play, they know someone who does. When I pitch this series, I get an almost universal ‘hell yeah!’” In a surprise twist, Arnold Schwarzenegger is involved, too. Dave shared that Arnold responded to him with, “Dave, whatever you want me to do, I’m in.”
And why the name Secret Level? It’s a shoutout to every gamer’s favorite Easter egg — the hidden gem you find if you dig deep enough. “Secret Level seemed to be the one thing all gamers understand,” Miller said. “That special element for those who are dedicated enough to explore.” Wilson summed it up perfectly: “It’s a reward for venturing behind the map.” And that’s exactly what this show feels like — a reward for true gaming fans. Fans at New York Comic Con loved the sneak peeks they saw.
Joining Schwarzenegger in this all-star cast are Kevin Hart, Keanu Reeves, Temuera Morrison, Ariana Greenblatt, Heaven Hart, Emily Swallow, Gabriel Luna, Ricky Whittle, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Merle Dandridge, Claudia Doumit, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Clive Standen, Laura Bailey, and Michael Beach.
Secret Level drops on Prime Video on December 10.
