Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore Star In Unsettling May December Trailer
Age is just a number… right?
That’s just one of the questions that viewers will have to tackle in Netflix’s eerie new trailer for May December. The romantic drama thriller, directed by Todd Haynes and with a screenplay by Samy Burch, is based broadly on the true and horrific story of school teacher Mary Kay Letourneau
In May December, well known actor Elizabeth (Natalie Portman) heads to Georgia as she prepares for her new film role. She’ll be telling the story of Gracie (Julianne Moore) and her inappropriate affair with an at-the-time 13 year old Joe (Charles Melton) that was once a nationally televised legal case. Gracie and Joe are now married following Gracie’s release from prison and have three children together in their controversial relationship. While Elizabeth stays with the couple and learns more about them, dormant feelings unravel. As her research continues, the decades old scandal starts to reveal more long lost doubts and concerns as seen by the trailer’s gut wrenching nature paired with delusion.
Throughout the trailer we see the possible differing themes at play between all three characters. Perhaps Gracie isn’t as put together as she appears to be. “Insecure people are the most dangerous, aren’t they?” she says. But could Elizabeth be about to fall down the same path as Gracie? The trailer certainly alludes to that fact with Elizabeth telling Joe “I already have an idea of what it must’ve felt like sneaking around with you” and saying to Gracie, “We’re basically the same.” Even Gracie seems to be on edge, teasing: “She’s getting on my last nerve. She’s everywhere I look”.
May December comes out in select theaters on November 17 and on Netflix on December 1.
