Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Delivers New Friendships And Major Laughs

Blue Justice is back!

The sequel to Sonic The Hedgehog takes place several months after Sonic (Ben Schwartz) beat Doctor Robotnik (Jim Carrey), with Sonic now trying to become a heroic figure in the community. When Tom (James Marsden) and Maddie Wachowski (Tika Sumpter) go to her sister Rachel’s (Natasha Rothwell) wedding in Hawaii, Sonic’s fun weekend at home is interrupted by Robotnik’s return — Knuckles the Echidna by his side — with the goal to capture the Master Emerald and take over the world.

This new film introduces us to SEGA fan favorite characters: Knuckles (Idris Elba), a warrior who lost everything like Sonic but is going down the wrong path, and Miles “Tails” Prower (Colleen O'Shaughnessey), a two-tailed fox who looks up to Sonic and is working with him to save the Master Emerald. While Sonic The Hedgehog 2 is a sequel, it works well as a standalone film too. It dives even deeper into the themes of finding your people and the family and friends who will stand by your side, as well as embracing your big moment when it arrives.

We get to see Sonic in a lot of hilarious situations, from partying it up while house sitting to embroiled in a dance battle to crashing a tropical wedding. While our animated friends take over most of the film, Rothwell steals the show as a jilted bride. Carrey lands over-the-top zingers with ease, meanwhile Schwartz drops pop culture references that will connect with older viewers. While Sonic is a bit long at times, it delivers big laughs, strong new friendships, and a shocking mid-credits scene that will have you eager for a third film.

Sonic The Hedgehog 2 is currently playing in theaters, opening to a major box office boost since the first film of $72.1 million.
