Pop Stop: Oscars Outrage Over Barbie Nominations

From outrage at the Oscars to new shows and cast announcments, each week Pop Culture Planet’s Danielle Forte will give you the biggest TV and film news you may have missed. Let’s get into it!

2024 Oscar Nominations

On January 23, everyone waited with bated breath for the 2024 Oscar nominations to come out, and. when they finally did, emotions were varied. While it was a big year for foreign films and a lot of firsts for representation for diverse actors, audiences were not too keen about Barbie’s Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig not being nominated for their respective categories, sparking a debate of whether or not they were really “snubbed” to begin with. Ryan Gosling added to the outrage stating “I am extremely honored to be nominated by my colleagues alongside such remarkable artists in a year of so many great films, but there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film.”

With the debate of whether or not they were snubbed is still under way, it seems as though people are losing sight of the wins of this year’s nominations, including Lily Gladstone being the first Native American to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress and America Ferrera’s first Oscar nomination for her supporting role in Barbie. Remember, people, commercial success does not equal Oscar nomination.

Doug Liman Boycotting SXSW Premiere of His Film Road House

Doug Liman, director of the upcoming film Road House starring Jake Gyllenhaal, has made an official stance against Amazon, boycotting the film’s debut at SXSW premiere. Liman has stated “my plan had been to silently protest Amazon’s decision to stream a movie so clearly made for the big screen. But Amazon is hurting way more than just me and my film. If I don’t speak up about Amazon, who will? So here we go.”

A renowned director such as Liman making a stance against a studio is revealing something that has long been brewing underneath the surface — the long winded fight of creatives against money hungry studios.

Kate Hudson to Star in Mindy Kaling’s Netflix Comedy Series

Has Mindy Kaling ever made something we don’t love? Has Kate Hudson? I’ll answer that for you — no. The two powerhouses are teaming together to create a new Netflix comedy series inspired by the Los Angeles Lakers president Jeanie Buss and the “family business,” or the NBA franchise.

Netflix gave the project the green light more than two and a half years ago in June 2021. Hudson will play Isla Gordon, the only sister in a family of competitive brothers.

Peacock announced the limited series order of a new suspense thriller Long Bright River, which will star and be executive produced by Amanda Seyfried.

Long Bright River will tell the story of Mickey, a police officer whose duties are to patrol a Philadelphia neighborhood that has been hit by the opioid crisis. But, when a string of murders occurs in her patrol area, Mickey soon realizes that her personal history might be related to the case.
