Kyliegh Curran Takes On Double Duty In Secrets Of Sulphur Springs Season 2
The mystery returns!
Secrets of Sulphur Springs is a time travel drama centered around Griffin and Harper, two teens who discover a secret portal hidden away in the dilapidated Tremont Hotel in Sulphur Springs, Louisiana that allows them to travel back in time. In season 1, they uncover clues about a girl named Savannah who went missing decades before. Season 2 puts new mysteries front and center, including the history of the Tremont. I spoke with the cast and creatives of Secrets of Sulphur Springs about what we can expect in season 2.
“You're going to get a lot of answers to things that we left hanging in season one right away, which will hopefully make viewers happy. Then we're gonna kick off some new mysteries,” creator and executive producer Tracey Thomson told me in an interview. “You're going to learn about the history of the Tremont and how it ties to Harper and why she's been so connected to it. You're also going to get a little romance this season.”
Kyliegh Curran takes on double duty this season as Harper Dunn and her ancestor Daisy Tremont. “I love a good challenge and Daisy was just so much fun to play. I did a good amount of research on how Daisy would act since she grew up in the 1930s,” said Curran. “What her mannerisms would be and how she'd speak, especially growing up in Louisiana. Of course, I already knew Harper [and] loved her so much.”
“There’s a lot of emotional scenes this season. Daisy [is] taken out of her home and she has to deal with being in a completely new era. Seeing her struggles and her trauma with that really makes you sympathize for her, as well as Harper learning about her family's past and the Tremont’s past and all that's happened to her family,” Curran shared. “I'm just excited for people to see our characters grow.”
The creative team was impressed with Curran’s work. “It’s an exhausting process for an actor. I don’t know how she did it, but she did it,” said Pratt Jr. “They each fall in love with each other’s parents, which is the father that one never had and the mother the other one never had or they lost at a young age. That concept was gold for us. It really worked.”
The creators behind Secrets of Sulphur Springs have a vast background in soap operas, which they use to dive deeper into more detailed mysteries. “Soap operas are a wonderful storytelling tool because they evolve everything. Whatever happens in episode one is reflected in episode two. People can change, they can fall in love, they can fall out of love. Viewers become very attached to them, so that was our goal,” said showrunner and executive producer Charles Pratt Jr. He shared that the best way to do that is with relatable stories that blend different genres: “We mix a ghost story with a relevant story about segregation in 1930 plus the fantasy of time travel and the twinkling of first love, which is something everybody relates to.”
Secrets of Sulphur Springs returns for season 2 on January 14 on Disney Channel with two back-to-back episodes. The season will be available in its entirety on Disney+ on January 19.
