Disney Releases Prequel Trailer For Mufasa: The Lion King
Disney has released the first trailer for Mufasa: The Lion King. This live-action film serves as a prequel to the studio’s 2019 live-action blockbuster The Lion King, giving the the backstory of Mufasa, the character who forever changed the lion kingdom.
The teaser follows Rafiki as he narrates the legendary tale of Mufasa to his granddaughter, the young lion cub Kiara, daughter of Simba and Nala. The movie takes audiences back to a time when Mufasa was an orphaned cub with no nobility, taken in by a sympathetic lion named Taka — the heir to a royal bloodline. Their fateful encounter starts a journey of self-discovery, as they are tested and must work together to defeat a deadly enemy.
Directed by Barry Jenkins, Oscar-winning director of Moonlight, the film features Aaron Pierre as the voice of Mufasa, previously voiced by James Earl Jones. Kelvin Harrison Jr. will voice Taka, while Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen reprise their roles as Timon and Pumbaa from the 2019 film. Donald Glover and Beyoncé also return as King Simba and Queen Nala, with Blue Ivy making her debut as Princess Kiara.
The film will feature 20 original songs from award-winning songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Mufasa: The Lion King will be released in theaters on December 20.
