David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan Bring Superman Back To The Big Screen In James Gunn’s Superman Teaser

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Superman! Famed superhero film director James Gunn has taken creative control at DC Studios and his iteration of Superman has already stolen audiences’ hearts. The first look at the highly anticipated film, Superman is finally here, and we at Pop Culture Planet are ecstatic to see the return of the Man of Steel — and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel — to the silver screen.

David Corenswet stars as Clark Kent, a mild-mannered reporter living a double life as Superman. Gunn previously revealed that this story will move away from the dark and gritty Metropolis portrayed in Henry Cavill’s recent DCEU franchise. Instead, this new narrative returns Superman to his roots — a simple Kansas boy who wants to save the world.

This teaser trailer is a vibrant homecoming for Clark Kent, who seems already well-established as Superman. With its brighter color grading, and the return of John Williams’ enchanting Superman score from 1978, it seems like the DC Universe might finally break free from its history of shaky box office performances.

Rachel Brosnahan joins the cast as Lois Lane, the beloved love interest of Clark Kent, and an ambitious reporter for The Daily Planet. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel actress is the perfect pick for Lane, with her quick wit, determination, and charm. The trailer shows Lois kissing Clark, both as himself and as Superman. Does Lois already know Clark’s secret identity? It’s exciting to see that Clark and Lois’s whirlwind romance takes center stage in the trailer, especially since recent iterations of the story have often overlooked the sweetness of their relationship.

The trailer establishes a hopeful start to the new DC Universe, with a large ensemble cast joining the Man of Steel. The trailer delivers quick glimpses of Clark with his adoptive father Jonathan Kent (Pruitt Taylor Vince) sitting at the Kent family farm, seemingly in an emotional state. It’s exciting to see the humility at the core of the Kent family shine through in the quick snapshots of Clark throughout the trailer. Superman’s heart and compassion are integral to his character, and it’s refreshing to see Gunn’s story fully embrace Clark’s bumbling, kind optimism while balancing it with the power of Superman.

An incredible treat for fans is the inclusion of Superman’s crime-fighting pup Krypto the Superdog. The trailer opens with a wounded Clark in an isolated snowstorm, only for his loyal companion Krypto to race in at supersonic speed to save him. While we’ve primarily seem him in animated DC projects, now Krypto the Superdog is here to lend a paw to his best friend in the live-action world too!

You can’t have a Superman story without his arch-nemesis Lex Luthor. Nicholas Hoult is taking on the main iconic villain of Clark’s story and Gunn has teased Luthor absolutely despises Superman when we meet him in this film. Past stories like The CW’s Smallville saw Lex and Clark as friends for a long time, but it seems the two are well past niceties in this trailer.

While Luthor will be the story’s main antagonist, we see more obstacles that pose a threat to Metropolis in the trailer. Audiences can even catch a glimpse of kaiju! This comic book creature looks similar to a giant worm and it unfortunately breathes fire. It’s clear that Superman will have many foes in this story, but none are greater or more iconic than Lex Luthor.

Superman is joined by some familiar superhero faces in this trailer. Quick shots of Nathan Fillion — with a crazy bowl cut — reveal a first look at Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern ahead of his Lanterns television show set to premiere in 2026. Fans were treated to blink-and-you’ll-miss-it first look at DC comics legend Hawkgirl, played by Isabela Merced, as she soars through the sky with her iconic mace in tow. Edi Gathegi's Mr. Terrific is also shown fighting crime. With a packed ensemble of heroes, the future of the DC Universe is promising. However, are all these heroes on the same side? Shots in the trailer show Mr. Terrific and Superman fighting one another rather than a common enemy. This begs the question of whether all the heroes share the same mission, or if they’re on opposing sides.

We are so excited to see Superman’s much anticipated homecoming to the big screen when James Gunn’s Superman hits theaters nationwide on July 11, 2025.
