Spring Awakening: Those You’ve Known Reunion Documentary Gets HBO Premiere Date
Were you even a theatre kid if you didn’t have an obsession with Spring Awakening?
Fifteen years after the Broadway run of smash hit Spring Awakening, the original cast and creative team came together for a one-night only reunion concert to benefit The Actors Fund — now that show is headed into our homes in the documentary Spring Awakening: Those You’ve Known.
Spring Awakening: Those You’ve Known will pull back the curtain to showcase the performances from the November 2021 concert, rehearsals, newly filmed interviews, archival video and photos, and performance footage from the original 2006 show. The edgy rock musical, set in the 1890s, tackled taboo topics, thrust a group of unknown teen actors into stardom, and influenced a generation of fans with its raw storytelling and captivating soundtrack. We’ll see the original cast as they reconnect with the timeless story, their path to Tony glory, and the unconventional love story of breakout stars Jonathan Groff and Lea Michele.
Documentary participants include Jonathan Groff, Lea Michele, John Gallagher Jr, Lauren Pritchard, Lilli Cooper, Skylar Astin, Gerard Canonico, Jennifer Damiano, Christine Estabrook, Gideon Glick, Robert Hager, Brian C. Johnson, Krysta Rodriguez, Stephen Spinella, Phoebe Strole, Jonathan B Wright, Remy Zaken, original Broadway director Michael Mayer, lyricist and playwright Steven Sater, score composer Duncan Sheik, and lead producers Tom Hulce and Ira Pittelman.
Spring Awakening: Those You’re Known debuts Tuesday, May 3 on HBO at 9pm EST and will be available to stream on HBO Max.
