Can We Trust Kim Kardashian? American Horror Story: Delicate Episode 5 Gives Us The Biggest Cliffhanger Yet
This week’s episode of American Horror Story: Delicate was the mid-season finale. Part two will not be released until 2024 and, let me tell you, it will be a long few months as we wait for it. This episode was my favorite by far. All of the characters seemingly revealed their true motivations against or for one another, the creepy factor was an 11/10, and the characters we were longing for answers for finally came to fruition. So, let’s dissect this, shall we?
We start with yet another blast from the past, but this time we’re taken to Manhattan in 1987. This time, it’s the infamous Ms. Preecher in a scene we’ve gotten familiar with throughout this season — she’s pregnant, in pain, and with Dr. Hill (Denis O’Hare) telling her to push. Ms. Preecher is already terrified and we don’t know why, but, at this point, we know Dr. Hill is the epicenter of her terror. Preecher refuses to push and that’s when Dr. Hill calls in the big guns for help: the two ladies clothed in antique black dresses with bird feathers on their head. Let’s call them midwives for now. They slowly come over and push out what we think, for now, is a baby. It’s alluded to that it is the same type of monster that Mary Tudor had in the previous episode. That’s all we’re given about Ms. Preecher, but it was just enough. While this is all within the first two minutes of the episode, my entire view on Ms. Preecher shifted. We’ve come to know her as a creepy stalker in Anna Victoria Alcott’s (Emma Roberts) eyes, but, as quick as the scene, I assessed that Preecher is actually trying to help Anna, but more on that later!
Let’s cut to Dex (Matt Czuchry) and his mom, Virginia (Debra Monk), walking on the beach in the Hamptons. Virginia is having another chat with her son regarding her upcoming court case against his father. She is suing Dex’s dad for satanic abuse. This scene concludes with Dex walking away from his mother and telling her he’s not going to help her.
Let me fast forward a bit — to get to the good, creepy stuff! — Virginia is walking out of the courtroom with her lawyer and he’s telling her it went great. She happily walks off and turns a corner, shifting her entire world. It’s no longer a bustling street in Manhattan, instead it’s Virginia’s own hell — or rather a hell she shares with Anna — but doesn’t know it yet. There’s imagery of black goats, known as a common metaphor for the devil, and four of the midwives slowly lurking towards Virginia. This is our confirmation that Virginia has been experiencing the same things as Anna, which leads me to believe that this entity that’s haunting them only haunts women. I’m also inclined to believe Dex is the sole problem here, especially after Ms. Preecher (Julie White) pulls Virginia aside after she gets away from the midwives. Ms. Preecher and Virginia get lunch together and Preecher explains that the same occurrences happened to her throughout her pregnancy and will definitely happen to Anna. She goes on to express that these midwives will take Anna’s baby in exchange for something, but we’re not sure what yet and the exchange doesn’t seem quite fair, to say the least. Preecher ends this lovely lunch saying that “they’re” coming for Virginia’s family, specifically Dex’s wife. And, they’re we have it folks: confirmation that Anna has been followed by something mysterious and evil. We also now know that Preecher has been trying to warn Anna and is not the menacing figure we thought her to be.
Something I need to mention is that Preecher’s past was too eerily similar to Anna’s current life. She was a successful woman who was up and coming in the high end fashion industry. Ring any bells? We’re only halfway through this episode and already I have so many questions. Could this mean that Dex is Virginia’s monster baby? Did his dad inflict this onto Virginia? If this is true, is Dex doing the same exact thing his father did to his mother, but now to Anna? Was Dex’s late wife a part of this cult and now that she has passed away they’re coming for him and his new wife? So many questions, so many cliffhangers, so many references, my head is spinning (but in a good way!). Now that we’ve gotten to this point, I would like to issue a formal apology for claiming that Dex redeemed himself in the last episode. I really should’ve listened to my gut because he’s still the worst.
Quick side note, but I was shocked this episode completely grazed over the fact that Anna ATE the raccoon carcass in the preceding episode, but I digress. After Virginia and Preecher’s eye opening get together, we’re back to the chaos that is Anna’s recent life. Anna’s belly has gotten HUGE for only her second trimester. She’s also in pain and expresses her concerns to the very creepy Dr. Hill, who basically tells her that pregnancy isn’t meant to be easy. Anna seeks help by doing pilates that actually seems to ease some of the pain. Afterwards, while she’s in the shower, she gets a quick flash of a black goat. She’s stronger than me — I would’ve bolted out of there — and just screams. Then she goes back to the locker room and sees the doll again. This is the least of Anna’s concerns at this point.
Once back at home, Anna tells Dex she wants Sonia (Annabelle Dexter-Jones) over for dinner. Hmm, taking the high road maybe? The night is just what you would expect: Sonia is creepy as hell, it’s awkward, and now it has me thinking Sonia really is Dex’s late wife reincarnated somehow. Nicolette (Michaela Jaé Rodriguez) also serves some side eye to Sonia. I know, I got full body chills. We cut to another dinner occurring, equally as horrible, with Siobhan (Kim Kardashian) and her director beau… oops, I mean Hamish (Dominic Burgess), who she has transactional sex with. Even Hamish is starting to get freaked out by Siobhan at this point questioning how she knew the script to the movie was going to be a hit, why she insisted on Anna being the star, and why she wouldn’t tell him who actually wrote it. After his frustration he finally demands, “Who the hell are you?” With Siobhan glaring at Hamish, my guess is she is nothing but bad news, my friend. I was honestly terrified of Kim Kardashian at this point. Her acting was scary good this episode and she is clearly at the center of something nefarious. I was scared for Hamish and anyone else who gets in Siobhan’s way… and I ended up being right — more on that later.
Anna and Dex get into a heated fight and I’m kind of here for it. Go Anna for finally sticking up for herself! I was cheering my girl on as she told Dex their marriage isn’t love, it’s suffocating — because girl, it is. We also see an evil side to Dex as he raises his voice at Anna when she is merely telling him how she feels (run, Anna!). Anna then goes into the basement to watch the Golden Globes Awards on her phone — with some friends! That’s right, Anna brings the dolls she’s been finding to watch the Golden Globes with her. This scene led me to wonder if Anna finds comfort in the chaos that is now her life. Anna ends up not winning, rather another girl from her agency Babette Eno (Taylor Richardson) wins. Yup, that’s right. If you ask me, that is textbook friendship betrayal. Siobhan ends up calling Anna right after asking her if she will do anything for an Oscar and if she wants an Oscar… more than a baby. Without hesitation Anna replies yes. Within a second of hanging up, a red gloved hand shuts Anna’s mouth and she’s whisked away.
Cut to the next morning, Anna is comfortably sleeping in her bed (no idea how she got there) until Dex (ugh) wakes her without any words, but tilts his phone towards her. Dex has an article pulled up, the headline being that the actress Siobhan nominated for a Golden Globe has been decapitated. Without time to process this, Siobhan calls Anna, and that ladies and gentleman is the end of our episode.
Wow. Just wow. I loved this mid-season finale. It had everything. We were left with more questions than answers, but in a satisfying way. AHS dangled just enough information for us to make our own theories without giving us any idea of what will happen in part two. While this season has left us with cliffhangers before, this has got to be their biggest one yet, and I am living for it. Now I’ve got my eye on Siobhan…
