Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo To Star In Wicked Movie Adaptation

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo are defying gravity! The duo have been cast as Galinda and Elphaba in the much-anticipated movie adaptation of the Broadway hit Wicked.

They announced their casting in posts on Instagram and sent each other heartfelt notes and pink and green flowers to celebrate. “Honored doesn’t even begin to cover it. I cannot wait to hug you. See you in Oz,” penned Grande, while Cynthia wrote to Ari: “Pink goes good with green. Congratulations Miss A, the part was made for you. I look forward to sharing this musical journey with you.”

Fresh off his recent adaptation of Broadway’s In The Heights, the Universal adaptation will be directed by Jon M. Chu. And both leading ladies are no stranger to the stage… Grammy-winning musician Grande got her start on Broadway in the musical 13, while Erivo is one letter off from EGOT status thanks to her role in the revival of The Color Purple. Crossing my fingers she gets that O as Elphaba!

Wicked is a Broadway musical based on the 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire, which is a retelling of the classic The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. With music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, the show debuted in 2003, led by the iconic duo of Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, and eventually became Broadway’s second highest grossing musical of all time. This film adaptation is decades in the making and a true dream come true for theatre kids.

Congrats to our new Elphie and Galinda!
