Netflix’s Maya And The Three Tells An Epic Latino Adventure

tv

Jorge R. Gutierrez creates a stunning, colorful world of adventure inspired by Mesoamerican art and exhibits of Mexico City’s Museo Nacional de Antopologia in Netflix’s Maya and the Three. Inspired by real Mexican warrior women, Maya is a fierce Eagle Warrior Princess who discovers a dark family secret that leads to a magical, epic quest to save the world with an unlikely group of new friends.

I can’t tell you how much I loved this show. The stunning and intricately designed animation, the dynamic action, the beautiful depth to the characters and story, and the message of underdogs being destined for something bigger than themselves - everything was brilliantly brought to life. They did a great job setting up every character especially our main quartet of Princess Maya, Rooster Warrior Rico, Skull Archer Chimi, and Barbarian Picchu. Each of them starts off alone, ends up facing off with their biggest insecurities, and realizing that what others perceived as weakness were their true strengths as they become a family of their own. Rico had to be my favorite to follow. Allen Maldonado was so funny in this role but also brought so much heart. They had such a stellar voice cast including Zoe Saldana, Isabella Merced, Gabriel Iglesias, Rita Moreno, Rosie Perez, so many great Latino actors telling this story that really celebrates the Indigenous roots of Latin America.

Jorge R. Gutierrez fans will also love the Easter eggs to his past projects like El Tigre: The Adventures Of Manny Rivera and The Book Of Life.

Go deeper into the prophecy, Lady Micte, Ah Puch, Easter eggs, and more in the video, above.
